What/Who else turns 30 this year?

Some people start their life after 30. Some others retire by 30. Thirty, as far as I understand, is a neither-here-nor-there age. It is a point from which there is much to remember, and yet, much to look forward to. On a recent evening, when I had nothing else to do, I thought of what other things/people/organizations turn 30 this year. The following is a list that emerged from a short research which followed:

  • Compact Discs
  • Emoticons (ah, all those winkies, smilies, etc. are as old as I am)
  • Toyota Camry
  • Dorling Kindersley Publishing (or dk, as some would relate, is now part of the Penguin Group. The pictorial reference books are always fun to look at and learn from)
  • The Weather Channel
  • Generation Y (those born in 1982 and after are known to be from Gen Y)
  • Outfest (Gay film festival in Los Angeles, California)
  • Adobe Systems (yep, the one which makes Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat et al.)
  • Autodesk (most known for the design application called AutoCAD)
  • Compaq Computers (well, it’s no longer called so. It’s HP now)
  • Electronic Arts (or EA)
  • LucasArts
  • Sun Microsystems (now, under Oracle)
  • Symantec (the makers of Norton Anti-virus)
  • Tommy Hilfiger (the brand, not the man)
  • Aramex (International courier service)
  • Racal Vodafone (the predecessor of modern-day Vodafone)
  • Michael Jackson’s Thriller (the best selling music album of all time)
  • Steven Spielberg’s ET: The Extra-Terrestrial (one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made)
  • Alice Walker’s The Color Purple (the book)
  • Richard Attenborrough’s Gandhi
  • Prince William (this Dude.. sorry… Duke (of Cambridge) is 3 days elder to me)
  • Kate Middleton (his wife, the Duchess)
  • Elisabeth Moss (of Mad Men series)
  • Kaka (Brazilian footballer)
  • Kirsten Dunst (Spidey’s Mary Jane Watson)
  • Priyanka Chopra (beauty queen, National-award winning actress)
  • Anne Hathaway
  • Ranbir Kapoor (Young and versatile Bollywood actor)
  • Abhinav Bindra (Olympic gold winner at Beijing 2008)

The list may not be exhaustive. There are plenty of people, I’m sure, who did not make it to the list. Among the companies that complete 30 years in 2012, it is quite evident that a number of them are presently large or part of large IT firms. No wonder then, in 1982, TIME Magazine chose a non-human as its Person of the Year for the first time: a Computer.

What are your views? Do write to me. Good Day! Good Night!
